Transparent, democratic workings
Registered as a federal charity in Canada and a non-profit society in British Columbia, the Zen Centre of Vancouver is governed by two councils – one for administration and one for Zen practice. The meetings are open to all qualified members of the centre as defined in the bylaws, and decisions are made by consensus or a minimum two-thirds’ majority.
The Administration Council is composed of longstanding community members willing to take responsibility for overseeing financial, legal and administrative functions. The council meets when needed and takes the place of a formal board of directors.
The Practice Council consists of the ordained and senior lay students. It meets regularly to monitor and review the various practices, including daily sits, retreats, special events and newcomers introductions.
