Our story

1960s  A Zen group forms after Kyozan Joshu Roshi visits Vancouver in 1966. Roshi, who founded Rinzai-ji in Los Angeles, visits annually to lead seven day retreats.

1970s The centre is registered as a non-profit charity. The community of practitioners steadily increases, using Buddhist temples and houses for meetings.

1980s A small property is bought in Strathcona. Eshin arrives in 1985 and introduces monthly one day sits and gives regular teachings.

1990s  A larger house is purchased. The community grows with more practice programs in the city while seven day retreats are held on Galiano Island.

2000s  The present property is bought and renovated to accommodate all activities.

2010s   A full range of activities is now offered at the centre, including meditation meetings throughout the week, residential seven day retreats , one day sits, residency for students, and ceremonies. Programs to train senior lay students gather strength.
